Mrs Davis' Chair

Curtis Krueger photographer

Mrs. Davis was a beloved, if sometimes cantankerous neighbor of mine. One afternoon I spied her antique iron garden chair in her backyard. I knew I must do something special with it. The next morning I "borrowed" it and took it out to the beach, photographing it under the changing light of dawn. I titled the photo Mrs. Davis' Chair goes to the Beach. I gave the photo to her, for her 98th birthday. She loved it and in return gave me her chair. After she passed away at 102, I began a photographic journey of Mrs. Davis’ Chair throughout all 50 States.

The morning of March 8th, 2005 found me on a steep ridge overlooking the rugged Nã Pali Coast of Kauái. A rainbow was shining in the valley below. Rain was drifting in and out of this exotic landscape. I was in the middle of what was to be an 11 mile hike. This was the moment when I knew I had reached my goal of photographing Mrs. Davis’ Chair across this beautiful and diverse land. Countless miles and some 550 rolls of film were used to bring this project to completion.

I dedicate this project to the memory of Mrs. Davis and for the
unexpected gift of this little rugged antique garden chair.
